Equally others take noted, this book is far more about the Gucci business since its founding in the early 20th century than it is almost the 1995 murder of Maurizio Gucci. I happen to relish learning more than about businesses and their histories, but because the writer was, by turns, telling the stories of the business and the family (including the murder), she ended up trying to do too much. Being more selective with the information presented would have made more a more cohesive and entertaining reading experience.
I would recommend it to anyone who has a heavy involvement in fashion business, since the bulk of the book is on gucci'due south concern operations in the 90s/early 2000s. Equally for
The author of this book is kind of amazing for how much data (and obscure, non-publically available information) she discovered on the gucci family drama, as well as on all the legal battles. The just thing I didn't like was how she would jump back and forth in fourth dimension, making a book as dense as this one even harder to follow.I would recommend it to anyone who has a heavy interest in fashion business organization, since the majority of the volume is on gucci's business operations in the 90s/early 2000s. As for me, I preferred the family stuff, and then this wasn't quite the page turner.

Do y'all remember the Gucci canvas numberless with the green and scarlet straps? I actually wanted 1 of those bags, although the ones I saw were probably all knock-offs. This book revealed that the revenue from that production line lone was worth $100 million dollars! When Maurizio Gucci took control of the Gucci empire in the mid ninety'due south afterward he outmanoeuvred his uncle and cousins in a hostile takeover, he decided that those numberless were too depression brow for Gucci and ordered that the production line exist cut overnight. That'southward $100 million in revenue, cutting overnight, without anything new to replace it. The leftover stock was sent to rot in warehouses. This was one in a string of decisions, combined with out of control spending that took Gucci from a growing and successful visitor into a downwardly spiral. At one point Maurizio was so broke ($40 million in personal debt as well as the visitor in the red) he was borrowing coin from his commuter and his American Gucci CEO. His secretarial assistant had to run the gauntlet of paying bills to suppliers and staff in instalments, until he finally agreed to step down and was bought out by Investcorp in one of the most successful IPO'due south in the fashion and luxury goods industry.
This is an incredibly well researched book. The comprehend lures yous in with the intrigue of a murder, only in reality in that location are only two capacity dedicated to that part of the Gucci lore, 1 at the beginning to depict the murder and one at the stop to describe the trial. The rest of the book is about business: boardroom fiasco's, family power struggles, legal battles and the earth of investment cyberbanking.
For anyone that has an inkling of interest in manner and big brands, this is a slap-up insight into how these businesses are congenital, bought and sold. It'due south not just most the advertising campaigns and the big names. The legal bills alone will brand your optics water.
PS. I recommend doing a google search on Patrizia Gucci to see what she is upward to now!
...moreSimply that'southward a case of faux advertising if e'er I saw one.
If you're reading this because of the murder forget it. The book opens with the murder of Maurizio Gucci just then takes about 70% of the book to go dorsum there and is relatively defective in details, considering the blurb makes it sound like this is the focus of the book.

To give it its full title – The Business firm of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed.Only that's a instance of imitation advertising if e'er I saw one.
If yous're reading this because of the murder forget it. The book opens with the murder of Maurizio Gucci but and then takes about lxx% of the book to get back there and is relatively lacking in details, considering the blurb makes it sound like this is the focus of the volume.
The showtime half of the book is the history of the family and the business, but then it devolves into a business report detailing corporate takeovers and stocks and shares and whatever who cares stuff.
The murder pops up now and again among all the business stuff making the book seem rather disorganised. I should mention – it does seem to be meticulously researched.
And this narrator?! I've occasionally boosted a rating because of an excellent narrator but I don't think I've ever wanted to lower my rating before. He puts on so many unlike accents. Yep, Tom Ford is from Texas but since when did he audio similar a cowboy! And the two English women who appear early on (they married into the Gucci family and I can't think who they are now), did he just stick a pivot in the map and choose a random regional emphasis? I tin can't speak for the Italian accents he used but they were probably just every bit bad. And that'southward just the accents. He pronounces the car manufacturer Seat similar the matter you sit on, and Balmain… If you lot get a narrator for a volume that is primarily about a European fashion business firm it's definitely going to mention others – make sure the narrator can pronounce them correctly! Those are merely the things that stuck out – surely others slipped by me.
The upcoming moving picture has potential because I'm sure they will focus on the 3 or so chapters of the book detailing the relationship betwixt Patrizia and Maurizio and his murder.

I happen to like really dense not-fiction, especially looks into circuitous webs of corporate malfeasance/mismanagement, thus House of Gucci was a super solid read for me. Merely I think most people who saw the flick/came for the true law-breaking drama will be annoyed/frustrated/disappointed. And even with my inclination, the volume frustrated in a few points, then it's not a v star/must recommend from me, either.Just, man, is it an heart-opening picture of the rise and fall and rise over again of Gucci! And that's really what it is: this volume is 90% solely about the family unit and the business, non about Patrizia Reggiani and the true law-breaking aspect of it. I really liked how it started at the get-go and then moved chronologically through the history of the visitor, via that lens: the company. The book goes long stretches focusing solely on the nitty-gritty of business decisions and disagreements/literal fist fights/backstabbing/lawsuits with nary a mention of Patricia/Maurizio's spousal relationship/personal lives fifty-fifty though you know, logically, many things were happening meantime.
Information technology would be interesting to encounter a differently lensed have that blended the two narratives together in one stream for context, as I did find myself wondering more than once "ok Maurizio'due south is interim similar a giant asshole/moron during this period at Gucci--how does this dovetail with what was going on with his spousal relationship/at habitation?" Especially given Patricia's eventual diagnosis as having npd and, well, that she murdered him... one can only one how much of his business spiral was connected to his personal spiral.
But for me, the business concern-only focus was certainly interesting enough. I came abroad with a pretty solid understanding of the family, the civilization (both in the concern, the family, and Italian business culture), the diverse toxic dynamics and the broader business organization/industry picture throughout the years. If you love style, way history, and Usa & international corporate/business/stock/conglomerate/investment nerdery... it's really interesting! However it's also LONG, and a dense read. I think those who want the juicy narrative/true law-breaking parts will exist also bored to cease it, honestly.
The storytelling way sits between "a scrap dry out" and "slightly narrative"--there are some vividly painted scenes, to great outcome, but many stretches that FEEL like informational journalism. It'south fine, but on the calibration of "evocative narrative journalism that reads like fiction" and... not that--this sits closer to "straightforward, super in depth piece of long class journalism." And so it'due south not one I'd recommend to a "reluctant not-fiction" reader, basically.
Where I gave intermission more than than once was the sourcing where specific scenes of Maurizio and Patrizia'south relationship was concerned. Different some non-fiction that makes clear what the sources are for select stories, this volume doesn't do that--at to the lowest degree NOT in the parts almost the "juicy" true law-breaking/personal stuff. Without such sourcing/citations, I simply stopped more than once at a incendiary description of Maurizio getting violent with Patrizia, for example, or saying something Actually nasty... and wondered "source?" Because if Patrizia is that source, as I doubtable for these instances that were strictly between them, it makes me... itch in a very uncomfortable way to describes these scenes as fact. The man is dead--he cannot defend himself. Did he really choke Patrizia and say this will brand y'all taller?! Ma'am, I'm going to demand an independent, corroborating source on that. I'm but not 100% comfortable with accepting Patrizia's telling of... anything as objective fact. And if there was boosted sourcing, as I said, it's not said on the page. It made me super uncomfortable.
So I can recommend this with caveats, per above. A great read for a sure kind of reader/non-fiction fan. Did make me slightly sorry we didn't become Business firm of Gucci every bit a Succession-esque mini-series b/c it is RIPE for that... now I know why the movie couldn't decide who the main character was, or what the chief story was... b/c it was crimson picking the small amount of truthful criminal offense from what is really a family and business saga. And that side of it is And then much more interesting than depicted in the film! (also wow was Adam Driver horribly miscast. Jared Leto as well, imo)

Perhaps non-fiction with then much history and facts just isn't my thing and others will enjoy this a lot more than than I did, but it just felt also dense for me, and the huge focus on the business side of the corporation was a bore for me personally. If you know me, you know that I was here for the family drama and the gossip, non pages and pages virtually stocks and investors (and to exist fair, the championship of the book is literally A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed , so of course that's what I was expecting).
In the end, though there was a lot of madness and greed, there wasn't plenty murder and glamour.

The Firm of Gucci is too long. Nonetheless, there is much to tell about the ascension of this empire from its apprehensive beginnings in a small leather purse shop. Yous may savor reading about all the buiness transactions over the years that finally removed the compamy from family unit hands. Simply almost people will come to read near the murder of Mauritzo Gucci. He was the Gucci who concluded up in power at the finish. He was the son of one of the original 3 brothers. His honey of spending and non having a good business sense resulted in him losing the visitor.
His inabilty to deal with his personal life led to his death. Reading this book you lot will read virtually yacht races, vast wealth, and interestingly the rise of designer Tom Ford.

Okay. All I knew about Gucci before I read this volume and before the film came out was that:
one. It is a brand from Italy.
two. Wealthy people like it.
3. Purses and shoes is what it is famous for.
4. Yous would see people in the ninety'due south wearing information technology and information technology popped up a lot in movies or ads in magazines.
When the film came out and when this book was brought up as the basis behind it, I was similar, 'Oh! At that place was crime involved? There was murder?' I knew Versace murder, simply I had no idea Gucci had one too. I like true crime, crazy families, and insight on mode - here we become!
If you were like me, you will enjoy the written format of the book. The first chapter opens upwards the date / scene of the offense / murder. Then, the author takes us back in time through the family tree and how everything the family unit has washed probably atomic number 82 up to this murder.
While it was very interesting learning about the Gucci name, the Gucci family, and of form, the influx it had on the wealthy and stock market place, I got bored sometimes. I arraign that on the amount of people who honestly kissed so much ass to this family that they were afraid of even putting them downward or saying annihilation negative or truly gossipy. Every interview with them was everyone adoring what the family unit did and though their brand was ruined in the late seventy'due south to late 80's, nobody gave a fuck. They look back on it and were like, teehee lol, that'south concern? Nonetheless that comes from the European / Italian team of Gucci than the American. The writer pointed out that politics and the influence that brands have in Italy is something of a wonder - information technology'southward on part with politics - that I give credit to the people who tried going into the business from the US and put information technology on a straight path? Nobody really cared over in Italy. It was but upsetting.
I am certainly not the clientele for Gucci products, merely I never liked them. Memories of growing up and seeing a lot of brown, tan and white shades. Apathetic.
After the history lesson, you finally get to the aftermath of the murder. That was pretty wild stuff, and the verdict was interesting - I conspicuously thought everyone involved were guilty but the friend and the people who helped the ex-married woman got off with a less to none sentence.
Overall, I learned a lot about European union style, a scrap well-nigh politics, a flake nigh fads. Gucci is still effectually merely branched out in terms of designs, products, and influence. All I know is I don't care and I don't call up I'll ever intendance.

I watched the pic before reading the volume and information technology left me with a lot of questions. I simply wanted to know more of the family and how things went down.Once I started listening to the audiobook I noticed that the moving picture missed out on so many important details and tampered with some. Moreover, the "greed" factor was since Gucci was established, not only past the murderer! I also found the storyline of the family unit so riveting and moving because they all partnered up against one some other as they were aiming to have fortune more getting Gucci upward to standards. Which lead to the ownership of the company falling on someone else'due south manus. It was ane dysfunctional family. Information technology truly saddened me to know that the company wasn't owned by Gucci themselves.
Anyhow, listening to the audiobook was such a skillful idea, I feel if I read information technology —how historical it was— I would've constitute it a bit slow and wouldn't have enjoyed it. Information technology is truly an astonishing story. I propose anybody to read/mind to the volume instead of watching the picture show!
